The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have one of these prints in their collection. Luigi Kasimir, an Austro-Hungarian born etcher, printmaker, and landscape artist, was heavily inspired by the various places he traveled within his life. Born in 1881 in the now Slovenian town of Pettau, Luigi emerged from an accomplished family of artists. His father, a renowned painter, greatly inspired his son. Luigi’s grandfather, a notable painter and poet, also fed Luigi’s passion for art and nature. Luigi studied at the Vienna Academy of Art under William Unger, where he discovered the art of etching. Soon after, he used this acquired knowledge and his love of painting to develop a unique style of printmaking known as the multiple plate color etching process. Hence, changing the future of etching and printmaking as a whole at the turn of the 20th century. Before he advanced this process, the majority of print makers would only use black and white ink. Artists would add color to the etchings by hand but many would turn out looking poorly done and not precise. However, Kasimir developed a much more complex etching process. His etchings require printing separate plates one after another. For one print, he would use as many as six separate metal plates. Luigi Kasimir was internationally praised and well-known during his life. He died in 1962 in Grinzing, Vienna, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy. http://www.kasimirmuseum.com/luigi-kasimir/
