However, it was not just the news story that captured his listener’s imagination, but Thomas himself.Born on April 6, 1892, in Woodington, Ohio, Thomas grew up in Victor, Colorado. He pioneered radio journalism with a career that spanned 50 years. He made his first sojourn to the battlefield during World War I, and began a daily newscast on NBC in 1930. Thomas later worked for CBS News during his long globetrotting career.Thomas was the first reporter to enter Germany following World War I, bringing back eyewitness accounts.Between his standard opening—“Good evening, everybody”—and his closing—“So long until tomorrow”—people knew they were hearing a solid, objective voice of authority. Before his career in radio, from 1919–1922 Thomas traveled the world, writing and lecturing. Thomas said his ambition was “to know more about this globe than anyone else ever has.”During World War II, Thomas broadcast detailed accounts of the war, often from a mobile truck behind front lines. Lowell Thomas died on August 29, 1981.He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1989. By Dr. John Ansley, Marist College ArchivistOne of the great adventurers of our day has died. Lowell Thomas Jr., explorer, filmmaker, best-selling author, Alaskan bush pilot, U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, philanthropist, athlete, Alaska senator and lieutenant governor, conservationist, and loving husband and father passed away on Oct. 1, 2016, just five days shy of his 93rd birthday. Lowell Thomas Jr., the son of renowned broadcaster Lowell Thomas and his wife, Frances, was born on Oct. 6, 1923, in London, where his father was in the midst of his Allenby–Lawrence travelogue tour. From that day, Lowell Jr. was immersed in his father’s work and love of adventure. He traveled extensively before entering Dartmouth College in 1942 and later that year joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he trained pilots during World War II. He returned to Dartmouth in the fall of 1946 after his service with the Army Air Corps, and while finishing his final year at Dartmouth, he competed nationally on the College’s ski team and presented lectures across the U.S. based on his travels. Upon completing his degree, he traveled to Iran and Turkey, where he collected materials for travelogues he presented on a U.S. tour during the winter of 1948-49. In the fall of 1949, Lowell Jr. and his father became the last Westerners to travel to Tibet before it was overrun by communist China in 1950. This was the most significant time between father and son, and it built a powerful bond they would maintain for the rest of their lives. Lowell Jr. wrote his first of several books, Out of This World: Across the Himalayas to Forbidden Tibet, about the experiences he shared with his father, and it became an international best seller. Through his famous radio broadcasts, many directly from famous ski areas, Lowell Thomas lured many people into trying the sport he so loved.Lowell Thomas was born on April 6, 1892 in Woodington, Ohio and was raised in Cripple Creek, Colorado. He began his career as a journalist after graduating from the University of Denver.Thomas was a war correspondent in Italy during WWI. In 1917 he was introduced to skiing by the Italian Alpine Troops of Monta Rosa, near the border separating Northern Italy from Austria. He began skiing for recreation in 1926, “right on these rolling slopes of Quaker Hills,” as he recalled, near his home in Pawling, New York.During the first Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid in 1932 Thomas signed up for lessons from Norwegian, Erling Strom, who had been hired to teach members of the Lake Placid Club. When Katharine Peckett of Sugar Hill, New Hampshire brought over the first Austrian ski instructors, Thomas was introduced to the Arlberg technique of swift down mountain running and high-speed turns. He was soon a ski enthusiast.Beginning in 1930 Lowell Thomas and the News went out over the airways five times a week for 45 consecutive years. Ten million faithful listeners tuned in to each broadcast. From the appearance of the first rope tow set up by Bunny Bertram at Woodstock, Vermont in 1934 to the opening of Sun Valley in 1937, Thomas was on the scene. As ski areas developed throughout North America he could be found among the first skiers on the slopes. As a public figure, he as a wonderful ambassador for the sport of skiing and often found an excuse to broadcast from a ski area. His famous sign off after each broadcast was “So long until tomorrow.”No cautious skier, Thomas paid his dues by breaking both legs and his collar bone over the years. In 1972 he was named an honorary member of the National Ski Patrol. With President Gerald Ford, he served as honorary co-chairman of the Ski Hall of Fame building fund drive.America’s most famous broadcast journalist, adventurer and ski enthusiast died on August 29, 1981.Lowell Thomas was elected to the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame in 1966.
