LOTTA CRABTREE - AUTOGRAPH 10/06/1888 - HFSID 19337 LOTTA CRABTREE Lotta Crabtree signed a card in 1888 Signature: "Lotta/Oct 6th 1888". 3¾x2½ card. The quintessential female entertainer of her time and a true child of the Gold Rush, Lotta Crabtree (1847-1924) was raised in California's gold country and performed in the vaudeville houses of San Francisco. By the age of 12 she was known as "Miss Lotta, the San Francisco Favorite." Crabtree became the most popular comedienne of her era and the highest paid performer on the Broadway stage. She clearly invested her earnings; at age 22 she purchased San Francisco real estate to begin a fortune valued at $4,000,000 at the time of her death in 1924. Crabtree retired from the stage in 1892, at 45, but made one last San Francisco appearance at "Lotta Crabtree Day" at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. She never married, and died in 1924 at her New York home. "The New York Times" called her the "eternal child" in her obituary. At the height of her career, Crabtree was known as "the nation's darling". Nail head sized stains in upper left and upper right corners. Mounting stains on verso (no show through).
