In 1985 Connecticut discontinued tolls on the turnpike An interesting article from 1982 about the tokens:"New tokens for the Connecticut Turnpike were put into use this week, and they not only work at tollbooths on the highway, they do just as well in the turnstiles of New York City's subways.The problem is that a subway token costs 75 cents and the turnpike tokens can be purchased in rolls of 40 for 17 1/2 cents each. The standard turnpike toll is 35 cents, and the token was intended to give regular users of the road a discount.Toll plazas began selling the tokens on Oct. 18. By Nov. 9, six days before the turnpike began accepting the tokens, New York's Transit Authority began finding them in subway token boxes and informed Connecticut officials of their illegal use.But Connecticut's Department of Transportation, which paid $218,000 for the minting of 10 million tokens and has already sold 40,000, said yesterday that it did not intend to stop selling them or to buy back the tokens used on the subway."
