Description: Two photo books by noted Chicago-based Lithuanian photographer Algimantas Kezys. Kezys work is collected by major art museums around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Institute, and the LA County Museum of Art. Kezys died in 2015. 1. "Double Prints: Algimantas Kezys: May 4 - June 30, 1990, Gilman/Gruen Galleries, Chicago, Illinois". Copyright 1990, printed in Chicago. In this 72 page softcover book, Kezys shows photo prints he created combining exposures of two different images to create a surreal image that is a metaphor of reality. He calls this photographic allegory in his two page introduction to the book. The rest of the book are black and white images. Laid in to this book is a receipt for the original purchase of the book from Galerija, which I understand was Kezys own gallery (although the address on the receipt is of Gruen Gallery in Chicago). A small yellow Post It note is adhered to the receipt with handwriting in Lithuanian. The first word is Ačiū, which means "Thank you" (says Google Translate). I can't make out the second word. The third word is "Alg" with a period at the end. Based on examples of Kezys signature available on eBay and elsewhere, this appears to be his signature of his shortened first name. 2. "Faces of Two Worlds: A Study in Portraits of the Lithuanian Immigrant Experience: Photographs by Algimantas Kezys, with notes by the photographer. Volume 1 - Post World War II Lithuanian Immigrants to Illinois" Copyright 1986, Published by Galerija, Chicago. 187 pages with black and white portrait photos throughout. Softcover, with front and back end-pages portraying scenes from "Unfinished Journey" a 1986 linocut by Janina Marks in black and red. Here Kezys provides portraits of various Lithuanian post-war immigrants to Illinois, divided by when they arrived and what jobs or roles they have in society. Each two page spread includes a one page writeup on the person and a full page portrait photograph. The write ups include the person's ideas on maintaining their ethnic identity. Kezys undertook this study to consider how these Lithuanians could maintain their ethnic identities without the ability to bring in "new blood" from the old country, due to the situation with the government and Soviet control. See the photos for additional insight on content and condition of this pair of photo books from a noted Chicago-based art photographer.
