Description: After several experiments had shown its feasibility, Los Angeles Airways was awarded a contract to deliver and pick up air mail in the Los Angeles area, utilizing rotary-wing aircraft. The service was limited to a radius of 50 miles from the Los Angeles Airfield and was performed in three segments. The inaugural equipment was a Sikorsky S-51 helicopter powered by a 450 HP Pratt & Whitney engine. It used a single pilot and was capable of carrying 900-1,000 pounds of mail divided between the cabin area behind the pilot and a rear cargo compartment. This cover was carried on the January 10, 1948 inaugural Air Mail Route 84 flight from Los Angeles, California to Santa Ana, California (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 84-27.After Post Office Department support in the form of mail subsidy was eliminated from Air Mail Route 84 (prior to 1965), Los Angeles Airways entered bankruptcy and ceased operations. The certificate for the operation of Air Mail Route 84 was subsequently canceled by the Civil Aeronautics Board on September 2, 1975.
