Description: In the days long before Google, before AltaVista and Lycos, even before Archie and Veronica... back when it was called "online information retrieval" and was both arcane and expensive.... I was a very active user of Dialog (originally owned by Lockheed). I wrote lots of articles about it, had an information brokerage business where I did searches for clients, and spoke at conferences about blending this technology with microcomputers. These were the days when "database downloading" for later search would get people making legal noises, and charging for information was so radical that it disrupted the library world. In other words, this is a bit of history. It is my entire file of Dialog-related documents from the mid-eighties, including...... 94-page presentation book from a searching seminar, pocket guide, 1986 introductory guide to searching, 1985 booklet about dialmail email service including mailing lists, Business connection reference card, logon procedures and telephone numbers for network access (tymnet and telenet), marketing brochures for dialogue link and dialnet, a 1987 price list with every database listed with connect time charges per minute, Business connection marketing literature, database lists, etc. The price list showing all the databases is one of my favorite parts of this... Lots of them are in the $1.50 per minute range, with extra charges for offline printing of retrieved records. In 1987, it was very common to spend over $100 an hour to do what we now take for granted... And it required serious skills and efficiency. Log on, hit the databases you need, grab the data, and log off as fast as possible. One could use this batch of Dialog literature as the basis for a detailed article about the history of online searching, and I will include a short bibliography of my own pieces on the subject in Online Today, EDN, and others (full text in my archive server)
