Description: Lloyd Hale Knife Custom Art Knife. Although Lloyd Hale did not invent the art knife genre, he is often credited with being one of the first custom art knife makers. This is a functional knife that Hale created for a New York collector in 1976 and reflects our nation's Bi-Centennial theme. Years ago, after I had acquired the knife from a well-known known knife dealer, with knife in hand, I visited Hale at his home/workshop in Pulaski, TN. Upon seeing the knife, Hale burst out in laughter, and he went on to tell me that he lost a lot of money on making the knife. Why? Well, he recounted that he should have quoted his patron at least twice the figure for making the knife. Hale told me that he grossly underestimated the amount of time it would take to build the knife. MEASUREMENTS: The overall length is 13.5" and the blade is 8.5 inches. DESCRIPTION: KNIFE: The top of the blade represents as eagle with outspread wings. This has a file worked brass ferrule and a shaped and file worked nickel silver guard and pommel. The handle is horn and has been carved and fluted. SHEATH: The leather sheath has a nickel silver throat and tip and its edges are scalloped and the frog is file worked. CONDITION: The knife had been on view in a museum display case and a small circle of glue residue, which I have not attempted to remove, is found on one side of the metal sheath tip, otherwise it is a beauty that will fit into the most discriminating collection.
