A wonderful container plantSimilar flavor to Black Mission FigZones 7-9 Plant your Violette de Bordeaux fig tree in a location where it will get full sun and have room for the canopy to expand. This cultivar grows 4 to 5 feet wide. The soil should drain well and should have plenty of organic material, although figs will tolerate poor soil. The ideal soil pH is between 6.0 and 6.5, but the trees will tolerate a pH range between 5.5 and 8.0, advises the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Figs have a shallow root system that can extend beyond the canopy. This is one reason established trees are drought tolerant. However, for the best harvest, be sure to water the trees if you don’t get sufficient rainfall. Aim to give each tree about 20 gallons of water each week during the growing season. Avoid wet, soggy soil. Overwatering can cause the fruit to split. Most times, fertilizer is unnecessary for established trees. However, if you have poor soil, you can apply a balanced 8-8-8 fertilizer in the spring. Follow the package instructions and apply the fertilizer to the soil about 1 foot away from the crown of the tree. You can also amend the soil with compost and manure. Other Care RequirementsPruning is unnecessary to have a healthy and productive tree, but it can help control the size and appearance of your tree. Fig trees send up a lot of shoots and have a bushlike growing habit, so pruning is required if you want to maintain a more treelike appearance. Prune the fig tree in the late winter before new growth begins but after the last frost. Cut away any dead branches, unneeded suckers and lateral branches near the ground. To protect your Violette de Bordeaux fig from disease, be sure to disinfect your garden tools before pruning. Wipe the blades with Lysol or another disinfectant before making any cuts, advises University of Florida IFAS Gardening Solutions. Dormant trees can survive temperatures down to 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, advises the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. They may die back but will come back in the spring when temperatures warm. If your area gets colder than this, consider growing your fig in a container that is 15 gallons or larger. Move the container indoors to a shed or garage during the winter months. Trees in containers may need a slow-release fertilizer and more water, as the soil may dry out faster. Fig Tree ProblemsThese trees are generally healthy and have few pest and disease problems. Fig trees grown in sandy soil may suffer from root-knot nematodes. Symptoms include stunted growth, poor fruiting and knots or swellings on the roots. Destroy any affected trees and if you opt to use the site again, treat the soil with a nematicide before replanting. If nematodes are a problem in your soil, consider switching to a different cultivar that is nematode-resistant, such as Ficus carica ‘LSU Purple,’ advises the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Fig rust is a fungal disease that causes yellow-green spots on the leaves and leaf drop and prevents fruit from maturing. Remove and destroy any affected parts of the tree and spray the tree every three to four weeks with a 4-4-50 Bordeaux spray to protect the tree against further infection. If your tree has mottled leaves, it may have mosaic, a viral infection. There is no treatment or cure, but many trees will continue to grow and produce fruit. If your tree has dwarfed fruit from the infection, you can remove the tree. Pictures show adult plant and its possible applications. The pot is not included.
