Waterford Crystal is the brand name of beautiful crystal glassware and other crystal items. Its roots go back to Waterford, Ireland, beginning in the year 1793. Today, Waterford crystal is still produced and the company is a part of WWRD Holdings Ltd. (bought in 2015 by Fiskars Corp.) that also produces products by Wedgwood and Royal Doulton.Knowing How to Determine the Quality of Waterford CrystalIs a cord or line in crystal a flaw? No. A line or cord is not considered a flaw. This almost invisible difference in the density of the crystal occurs during the fusing of molten crystal. Although visible when it reflects light, the cord disappears when a goblet or vase is filled with water.Does a seed or bubble in crystal constitute a flaw? Tiny bubbles the size of a pinpoint sometimes form in the fusing or melting process and do not affect the quality of the piece. Such slight variations are natural results of handcrafting. How to Identify Waterford CrystalTo identify Waterford crystal, hold the item up the light and use a magnifying glass to locate an acid stamp that says “Waterford." Alternatively, if the item was made after 2000, look for an acid stamp in the shape of a seahorse. You can also look for a gold sticker featuring Waterford's green seahorse emblem.Caring for Your Waterford CrystalThe best solution is always washing by hand using a soft cloth. Avoid using scouring pads or abrasive detergents. Do not put your crystal in a microwave or an automatic dishwasher. This may cause your crystal to lose its brilliance. Rinse well with warm water and air-dry item upright. For bowls, vases and decanters: Clean by filling them half-full of moderately hot water, a small amount of mild detergent, two tablespoons of white vinegar and 1/2 cup uncooked rice. Swirl the rice around for a few minutes to remove the residue.
