Description: Limoges Theodore Haviland 2 Cups & Saucers Venice Floral Garland Gold 1925-1936 Elegant Decorative 8-Sided CUP & 12 Sided SAUCER Set of 2 from Theodore Haviland Limoges, France, Smooth Rim, Gold Trim, VENICE Pattern, circa 1925-1936 DESCRIPTION: This cup & saucer set was produced in 1925-1936. The pattern consists of garlands of pink roses & blue flowers with green leaves and vibrant warm yellow scrolls. The background colors are light yellow & white. The rims are trimmed in yellow and the cup's handles are painted in solid gold paint on the outside.   It is also decorated with green band of 1/2 flowers, on the Pilgrim (#1217) mold . This pattern is identified as Venice. CONDITION: While this set of 2 cups and saucers is classified as used, the condition is superb. We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the colors and no crazing. The lack of utensil scratches on the set attests to the high quality of the porcelain china. The gold paint shows very slight stacking wear on the bottom of the handles so this is not visible unless you hang the cups or turn them upside down to look at the bottom of the handle. See the photos, but remember that this is very close-up magnification (Photo #12). DIMENSIONS: The cup has a height of 2”. It is 8-sided with a diameter of 3 11/16". The saucer has a diameter of 5 5/8" with a height of 7/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892 and was joined by his son, William, in 1903. In 1919, Theodore died and his firm passed on to his son. It remained in the Haviland family until 1972. The company known as Haviland Limoges is still in operation today. The red & green overglaze mark on this is mark #35 as cited in Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain which was used from 1925-mid 1940's. It also has the green underglaze manufacturer mark #29 which was used 1920-1936. The cup & saucer set is on the Pilgrim mold which was produced in the mid 1920’s-1960’s. The Venice pattern was introduced in 1926. This is dated to the circa 1925-1936 time period. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
