Description: This 1st Edition hardcover book, titled "The ARIKARA NARRATIVE OF THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE HOSTILE DAKOTAS JUNE, 1876" by O.G. Libby, first published in 1920 by The State Historical Society of North Dakota, was reprinted by The Rio Grande Press in 1976, exactly a century after the legendary fight known as “Custer’s Last Stand” took place. The book is a significant resource of primary source material concerning the Battle of Little Bighorn from the perspective of the Arikara Indian scouts who served under the immediate command of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. This is their story, their testimony of what took place during the campaign, and at the awful, fateful, bloody battle of the Little Big Horn against a strong coalition of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. Here they recount, survivor after survivor, that they did not run away from the Sioux, their hereditary enemy, out of cowardice but faced a difficult task and attempted to carry out Custer’s orders against heavy odds. The narratives of the individual scouts along with their accompanying biographies provides a vivid insight into Indian life as it existed on our reservations during that time. This volume is an important source of primary first hand testimony from actual battle participants for this period in our history. The attractive Centennial 1st Edition is in Near Fine Antiquarian condition, and is listed in Luther’s Custer High Spots as #70. Please review the photos as they are part of the description.
