Designed by Kelly Johnson the P-38 made its maiden flight on the 27th January 1939 and was introduced into service in 1941. A total of 10,037 were built. The Lockheed P-38 was introduced as an interceptor fighter but soon proved a valuable long range bomber escort for the 8th US Air Force's B-17 and B-24 bombers as they bombed targets further into Germany during WWII. The P-38 Lightning was the only twin engine daytime fighter produced in America during WWII. It was also one of the most effective American fighters of the War and was the mount for two top-scoring U.S. Aces of the war.
