Description: LIFE IN THE STARSAn Exposition of the View that on some Planetsof some Stars Exist Beings Higher the Ourselves, and on One a World-Leader, the Supreme Embodiment of the Eternal Spirit which Animates the Whole. By Sir Francis Younghusband K.C.S.I., K.C.I.E. First Edition. Published by John Murray, 1927. Octavo Hardback. Measures approx. 8.75" x 5.5" (22.25cm x 14cm). (xiii) + 222pp, inc. index. Lieutenant Colonel Sir Francis Edward Younghusband (1863-1942) was a British Army officer, explorer and spiritual writer. He is remembered for his travels in the Far East and Central Asia; especially the 1904 British expedition to Tibet, led by himself, and for his writings on Asia and foreign policy. Younghusband held positions including British commissioner to Tibet and president of the Royal Geographical Society. Younghusband took interest in Eastern philosophy and Theosophy and dismissed the idea of an anthropomorphic god. Taking influence from Henri Bergson's Creative Evolution, he proposed purpose in the cosmos through a creative life force. Younghusband's philosophy of cosmic spiritual evolution was outlined in his books Life in the Stars (1927) and The Living Universe (1933). In the latter book he proposed the idea that the universe is a living organism. Younghusband held the view that spiritual forces in the universe are directing evolution and producing life and intelligence on many different planets. Condition: Some rubbing and small marking here and there to cloth, with a nick to head of spine, and a small bump at lower fore corner of rear board. 1927 gift inscription to front free endpaper. Title-page quite heavily foxed. Ditto, foxing to closed edges and margins throughout; occasionally encroaching upon the text, though it's still clear and bright nonetheless. Binding square and sound, with no loose or absent leaves. Remains a good original example of this scarce work, despite the aforementioned faults. Please see photos for further detail.
