Description: Large format mounted photograph of Boston Massachusetts Hose 2, Chemical 1 and Ladder 1 Fire Station with Horse Drawn Engine parked outside. Image by noted Boston portrait photographer Elmer Chickering. The fire engine is pulled by two horses and has a driver, a fireman on the back and likely a captain standing in front. The two bay doors of the station are seen as is the cobblestone area in front of the station. *Elmer Chickering (1857–1915) was a photographer specializing in portraits in Boston, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He kept a studio on West Street, and photographed politicians, actors, athletes and other public figures. Chickering’s gentlemanly demeanor won him a strong institutional clientele from baseball teams to the G.A.R. Special mention must be made of Chickering’s success with military portraits, which in 1880s Boston, vied with opera diva images for celebrity prestige. This photograph is 14” x 18” overall with Chickering’s embossed signature in the lower left corner of the image. The actual image is 10 ¼” x 13 ½”. The photograph itself is very clean. The mounting board has some staining along the bottom. See the scans. Rare Chickering image of this size. He is most well-known for portraits of celebrities.
