The film was, at the time, the most expensive picture ever produced, using 12,000 extras.The dustwrapper has large chips and about 10% loss in total (see pictures). The book similarly has some wear and fading (see picture). Toning to leaves as usual. The Readers Library was established in England by Derwent Hall Caine and Gordon Ralph Hall Caine, sons of the author Hall Caine in 1924. Readers Library titles were said to be selected by “one of the most distinguished of living men of letters”, presumably Hall Caine himself. The books were known for their interesting and sometimes sensational dustwrappers, and were sold for sixpence in Woolworths and in train station bookshops. The series was extremely successful and it is claimed that 7 million copies of Readers Library books were sold in England from 1924 to 1934; few have survived with their dustwrappers in good condition.
