Ritchie (1800-1865) was an English novelist who enjoyed some renown as a travel writer. This is a factual account of a journey made in April, 1835, under the employ of Charles Heath (1785-1848) the engraver and promoter of, among other illustrated annuals, "Heath's Picturesque Annual". Heath was an engraver of "great taste and delicacy" [DNB] whose engravings "are executed wtih marvellous technical skill and fidelity"--DNB. Among his pupils were the well known engravers Doo and Watt. The plates in this publication are after drawings by A.G. Vickers.
