Description: A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this specimen. Here is a nice rare aptychus pair (aptychi), from the world-famous fossil beds of Solnhofen, Germany. From the Jurassic, about 150 million years ago. What was an aptychus? Scientists today regard it as part of the body of an ammonite, though it is only sometimes found within an ammonite shell. It was a hard calcite formation found near the aperture (opening) of an ammonite. Solnhofen fossil deposits are where most aptychi are found. This one is a very large and superb condition pair (both sides), measuring about 38 mm by 37 mm, and 40 mm. at the longest measurement. Found on Solnhofen limestone, about 3.7" by 3.6", and weighing 1 lb. 4.55 oz.No paint or restoration has been added. We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity).
