Description: Item Details Very Large Antique English Mantel Clock, circa 1870 Offers Welcome A large antique Victorian mantel clock dating to the 19th century, circa 1870. The clock, of arched form, features a large engraved silver dial with black hand painted Roman numerals with outer chapter indicating minute marks; a subsidiary dial to the top allows the user to activate the chime or to make it silent-ideal for use during the night. The dial is protected by a thick bevelled glass door which is encased within a mahogany frame and flanked by two classical columns. The whole raised on a stepped base and carved throughout. The 8 day mechanical movement strikes the hours and half on a gong sounding the Westminster chime. The clock is complete with pendulum and winding key. The mechanism is also protected by a door with a grill covered in original red material allowing for the mechanism to remain safe but for the sound of the chimes to be heard.
