Description: "Korean War Filmography" (2003, McFarland and Co., reprinted in 2008) is my second movie reference work. It is the definitive guide to movies made about the Korean War, although only about half of the 91 reviewed titles are combat films. As the Korean War was a transitional conflict between the global fight of World War II and the highly unpopular Vietnam War in Southeast Asia that eventually followed it, the movies about that "police action" varied from unwavering propaganda for the effort to cynical disdain for the conflict, with most movies marking territory in between. There aren't many classics about the Korean War, but they are here, from "MASH" (only the TV show had asterisks in the title) and "The Manchurian Candidate" to "Pork Chop Hill" and "The Steel Helmet." While big stars like Gregory Peck and Humphrey Bogart and William Holden and Robert Mitchum made movies about the war on the other side of the world most Hollywood productions employed more modest stars (John Hodiak, John Agar, John Derek, John Ireland, John Payne, John Saxon) for their modestly-budgeted productions that relied on stock footage for combat scenes. Nevertheless, the films about the war, most of which appeared between 1952 and 1959, represent a time capsule of the era, covering every important aspect of the conflict. This includes fighting in the sweltering summer months as well as the frozen winters, dealing with the POWs and the notion of "brainwashing" that came into vogue at that time, the incredible air dogfights as jets made their thundering presence known, little-known naval combat, and mostly the political turmoil when communist China joined the fight. Historical figures like Douglas MacArthur, Harry S. Truman, jet ace Joseph McConnell, minister-turned-pilot Dean Hess, Admiral John Hoskins and even chameleon con man Ferdinand Demara, Jr. become characters in some of these tales, brought to life by stalwart stars like Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, Alan Ladd, Sterling Hayden, Gary Sinise, Ed Flanders, E. G. Marshall and Gregory Peck. The book contains more than 100 photographs and / or artwork illustrations; I tried to provide artwork for each film plus a photo. Other features include a concise history of the actual war, listings of the films chronologically and by producing company and distributor, appendices on the films' historical accuracy and propaganda, and the subjects, elements and themes highlighted within their stories. A separate listing notes documentary films about the war and another, contributed by Darcy Paquet, describes notable South Korean movies about the war. It really is the definitive guide regarding movies made about the Korean Conflict. The books are unused; they have been in storage for years and I am attempting to lower my inventory. I will be happy to inscribe one upon request. Any copy I sell will be signed. Shipping costs will be combined for multiple items. International shipping is available at a flat rate of $25. If the actual cost is significantly less than that, money will be refunded. I have two other movie reference books that I am offering in separate listings: "Lee Marvin: His Films and Career" (2000) and "Gloria Grahame: Bad Girl of Film Noir" (2011). I am also offering other parts of my movie memorabilia collection on eBay: CD soundtracks, DVDs and movie stills. I will be adding press kits, pressbooks, other movie reference books, laserdiscs and other items as I can process them into listings. I try to list these items at reasonable rates, describing their condition as accurately as possible. If you have interest, please consider adding something to your own library or collection.
