The story is about a suicidal college student who, working with a demon, becomes a homicidal vigilante. The comic examines the consequences of vigilante violence. Kill or be Killed debuted to mostly good reviews, although some critics felt it was too similar to most of Brubaker and Phillips' previous collaborations (which is exactly why their diehard fans will lap it up) The protagonist is Dylan, who attempts suicide whilst depressed, only to be saved by a demon who allows him to live for an extra month for each life he takes. Is the demon real? How do those who know Dylan deal with his profound personality change? Is vigilante violence justified? These are some of the on the nose themes that are present in this pulp take, but it's the great combination of the story and art that will draw you in. Let’s face it, Dylan is a character that many of us can empathise with - he's not a superhero, he's not particularly successful in life, and love so he's more accessible to the reader than many other comic book characters out there. The artwork is absolutely fantastic, top notch, and loaded with vivid colouring. The Faustian pact is a simple one. Dylan must kill for the demon or die. Kill Or Be Killed is a revenge fantasy grounded in reality. It's not just the cool concept or the masterful way in which Brubaker deliver’s the story which is loaded up with great pacing and well-crafted characters, it’s not just Phillips' usual adept artwork that makes this special. Breitweiser's brilliant colouring is the vital ingredient which brings the whole world of Kill or be Killed to technicolor life. John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski is looking to adapt this into a movie franchise.
