Description: A Fine Khmer Sandstone wall relief fragment of an Apsara, the female spirit of the clouds and water. As an important motif in Hinduism, she is depicted as a supernatural female living in the celestial court of Indra, sent to earth by the gods as a sensuous celestial nymph to dance and seduce the hearts of demon ascetics. Apsara is depicted standing poise in a sanctuary wall niche, youthful and elegant, deep bosoms adorned with a jeweled necklace, Her face is characterized by a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, well-shaped mouth with insipid smile, and elongated earlobes adorned with triangular earring pendants. Her woven braided hair drapes to both sides like serpents, rising to an ornate headdresss decorated in a large rosette at the top. The fragment is presented in its unaltered condition, with detailing of the features clearly visible, a relatively smooth surface, and a naturally aged patina, deep covered in molted variations of hues and colours as maintained.
