Description: "THE PRODIGAL SON EVICTED FROM AN INN/BROTHEL". (From a suite of 3 prints illustrating the Parable of the Prodical Son) Plate number 67 at top right corner. Original copper plate engraving 1593 by KAREL DE MALLERY (Flemish School, 1571-1635. ) *Not as well known as his more illustrious colleagues the Wierix brothers and Collaert also working on the massive "Evangelicae..." project, Karel van Mallery was born in Antwerp. He was a pupil of Philips Galle and was registered as a pupil in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1585.He travelled to Rome in the years 1595-1597 and when he returned to Antwerp he became a master in the Guild in 1597. He married Catharina Galle, the daughter of his teacher on 10 January 1598. They named their son Philips. From 1601 he worked in Antwerp and in Paris for a period of about five years. In 1620-1621 he became deacon of the Antwerp Guild and in 1626 he lived in the Keyserstraet. He was the teacher of his son Philips van Mallery and the engraver Michel Natalis. Signed in the plate at bottom right corner. Extensively captioned in Latin at top and at bottom. CONDITION/TECHNICAL: Good. Sundry handling marks and a little browning over the long passage of time. Platemark line intact, with good margins beyond. A couple of insignificant tears in the blank right margin, I mention them only to be precise.Printed on thin, laid, chainlined paper. See it on ther lightbox. This impression comes from the 1607 edition of the "Evangelicae Historiae Imagines..." of Hieronymus Natalis published by Jan Moretus in Antwerp. This was an important Jesuit-sponsored Counter-Reformation treatise first published in 1593. Size: Engraved area (platemark area) measures 23 x 14.5 cms. ** One of my personal favourites in the series - so much going on. Note the jester/fool in the bottom left corner, ridiculing the Prodigal Son, while a dog barks at him. The son is escorted from the premises by two "bouncers", while the well-dressed lady "innkeeper" (or brothel madame?) pursues him, brandishing a shoe. This fine series - one of the most important collections of late 16th century Flemish engravings - which features 153 engravings by Hieronymus Wierix, his brothers Anton and Jan, Karel Van Mallery and Adriaen and Jan Collaert features in virtually every major Museum print collection.
