The city of Kannapolis was incorporated in 1984. The population was 42,625 at the 2010 census, which makes Kannapolis the 20th largest city in North Carolina. It is the home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, the Class A baseball affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and it is the hometown of the Earnhardt racing family. The center of the city is home to the North Carolina Research Campus, a public-private venture that focuses on food, nutrition, and biotech research. The Kannapolis Branch of the YMCA in 1940 had 12,815 members, making it the largest in the United States and Canada. In 1941, according to Y records, the Kannapolis YMCA became one of the first in the country to allow women 10 years before that became the norm across the United States. The national volleyball YMCA champions came out of the Kannapolis YMCA. The first library in Kannapolis was inside the YMCA. This Linen Era postcard, mailed in 1942, is in good condition.
