Graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in 1976, he excelled as an illustrator of children's books, as well as collaborating on set designs for the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC). He received several international awards for his work, including Honorable Mention in the Noma Contest, Tokyo, Japan, 1986, and Honorable Mention in Graphic Art, Plural Magazine, Mexico City, 1992. The Cuban writer and critic Alex Fleites expressed, "I follow Bonachea's work because of the unusual identity that exists between it and his person.
