Description: An original Habanera by Jose Maria Mijares dated 1997. One of the best know Cuban Americans artists. José María Mijares (b. Havana, 1921 – d. Miami, 2004) began his studies in 1936 at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. He lived in Miami from 1968 until his death in 2004. Florida International University awarded him with an honorary doctorate in fine arts in 2001 among many other awards. Mijares’ work has been exhibited in Havana, Paris, Caracas, Port au Prince (Haiti), Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Washington D.C., Miami, among other cities. He is know in Cuba, the USA and in Latin America as a great Latin American painter in particular Contemporary Latin American Art. He was part of Los Diez pintores concretos art collective from 1959 to 1961. His works have been sold at auction at Christie's.
