Here are the answers to some common questions: (ask a question and we'll add the answer to this section) Where is the Lye? Yes, cold process soap requires lye to turn oils into soap. Each oil adds a different quality to the soap (lather, hardness, conditioning), which is why you always see a blend of oils in our bar soaps. Lye is carefully added to the blended oils (lye requires extreme safety precautions) in the cold process soap method. Why is it called cold process? Well, we let the lye and oil interaction produce the heat required to make soap - we don't use an external heat source. You may have noticed that lye does not appear on any of our ingredients lists. That's because after the soap creating interaction (saponification) is finished, all the lye is used up. Absolutely no lye ends up in the bar soap - it gets all used up. In fact, in order to get a conditioning bar, we use more oils than the lye can use up, so you get a great bar of conditioning soap with absolutely no lye in the final bar of soap.What is "Saponified"? In our ingredients list, you see "Saponified oils of" and then the list of oils used to make soap. When lye and the oils go through their soap creating interaction, the result is the saponified (post lye interaction) form of the oils. Again, no lye exists in the final bar of soap, so lye isn't in the ingredients list, but at the same time all of the oils have been saponified (post lye interaction) so they have soap qualities. Think about when you freeze water to make ice cubes. The ice cubes are made of water, but ice cubes have different physical qualities than liquid water. A great example is super cold ice (dry ice) - it can burn you, but liquid water can take the heat out of a burn. Specifying that the oils have been saponified tells you the oils exist in their soap qualities form after interacting with lye.What is the difference between All Natural and Organic? Organic ingredients all come from living sources, in our case plants. We do not use any animal products (a common animal product is called tallow, found in many people's soaps but not ours) in our soaps or our facilities (which is why they are Vegan and Kosher). All Natural means that the ingredients come from natural sources, which includes minerals like salts and clays, and natural results of fire like activated charcoal. Minerals, by definition, can't be organic, because they have never been alive. So all of our ingredients are All Natural, and all of our bar soaps have at least 85% Organic content. Organic certification for the total bar of soap follows complex rules set up by the USDA NOP and NSF / ANSI 305 organic product standards; the USDA does not issue an organic certification for a bar soap that has All Natural minerals in their ingredients. That's why we clearly indicate our bars are made with All Natural ingredients and at least 85% Organic content, but we note that when some of the All Natural ingredients come from mineral sources, those bar soaps are not eligible for USDA Certification.
