Description: I have for sale a medal issued by the American Art Union that commemorated John Trumbull. The American Art Union, 1839-1851, was a subscription-based organization whose goal was to enlighten and educate an American public to a national art, while providing a support system for the viewing and sale of art "executed in the United States or by American Artists abroad" This is one medal of three medals issued by the American Art Union. Trumbull, June 6, 1756-November 10, 1843, was an American artist of the early independence period, notable for his historical paintings of the American revolutionary war, of which he was a veteran. He has been called the painter of the revolution. This medal is bronze, it is 2 1/2 inches in diameter and in a high grade circulated condition, close to uncirculated. The medal was struck at the United States mint and Charles Cushing Wright was the engraver. The medal obverse shows the high relief bust of Trumbull with his name. On the reverse it shows a female presenting laurel wreath to an artist with a sculptor awaiting his turn. The date 1849 is on the lowest step, P.P.D. D is on the second step and C.C.W. F. is on the third step and AMERICAN ART - UNION is at the sides. This medal is listed in the Medals of the U.S. Mint by Julian as number PE-35.
