Includes the first three bars of his march El Capitan. Autograph music quote signed: "'El Capitan'/John Philip Sousa/1902", 4½x3¼. Sousa has drawn three bars of music from his march El Capitan. In 1902, Sousa published his book, The Fifth String. Appointed leader of the U.S. Marine Band in 1880, John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) resigned 12 years later to form his own band. Sousa's Band achieved great popularity on its tours of the U.S. and Europe, largely due to the rousing marches Sousa had composed, including "Semper Fidelis" (1897), "Washington Post March" (1889) and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (1897). "The March King", who also composed 11 comic operas and two symphonic poems, also invented the sousaphone and wrote books. His autobiography, Marching Along, was published in 1928.
