Description: This painting was done in 1941 by Johannes Martinus Bach (1866-1943). It is a striking commentary on a historic moment in history. Germans invaded Denmark in 1940 and it remained under their control until 1945 at the end of the war. Through the window, Danish flags hang over the small drab figures walking below. The monotone colors and bars of the window strongly convey the mood many Danes must have had at the time. The painting is oil on canvas. It measures 32.5" x 24". With the frame it measures 37" x 28 1/2". The painting is signed JB 1941 in the lower right. And, on the back of the frame, Johannes Bach. And, it is also signed lower on the actual canvas. There are two repairs to the canvas which can be seen from the back - the lower repair looks to also be repainted some on the front. And, there is some light flaking of paint. The simple wooden frame is in good condition.Bach was a son of stonemason Willem Bach and Petronella Martina Roest. He was educated at the Craft School, then at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He was a student of, among others, Johan Philip Koelman, Frits Jansen, Johan Michaƫl Schmidt Crans and Herman Johannes van der Weele and later taught himself. Bach painted landscapes in the style of the Hague School. He also made stained glass windows. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio and the Sint Lucas Artists' Association. Bach died at the age of 77 in his hometown of The Hague.
