Description: DETAILS: Original first edition US Army World War II poster. Circa 1944. Double sided. Front features Joe Louis in military uniform with the caption: Joe Louis Says "We'll Win 'Cause We're On God's Side". Verso has photo of the 92nd Infantry Division. This poster was issued in two separate printings. The first was printed on standard newsprint and distributed primarily within African American communities. The later and more common printing is a bi-color lithograph on white paper that was distributed throughout the entire United States. Rare example of a US Army poster displaying African Americans positively - despite the fact that all branches of the military were still racially segregated at the time. Measures 10 x 13 inches. Nicknamed "the Brown Bomber", Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses, a record for all weight classes. Louis had the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history. Aside from his athletic accomplishments, Louis was also a respected leader within the African American community. He volunteered for military service in 1942. Realizing Louis's potential for raising esprit de corps among the troops, the United States Army used his images for military recruitment purposes within the African American community.
