Now this here is a CD that makes me emotional - whenever I talk about it, even when I type about it - and naturally ... every single-time I listen to it !! So, here's how my story goes ... if you don't mind listening, that is - Thanks ! Much obliged ... >>> So, when August '95 rolled-around - and we all know what happened then ... I all of a sudden, unexpectedly - naturally ... found myself in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco - Celebrating Jerry Garcia's Life - along with the Members of the Grateful Dead - and all of the other fellow Dead Fans - who were able to make it on that very-different day. While there, I caught word from a Friend - who had just gotten her hands on the - now widely known as ... " The Pizza Tapes". These were a portion of Garcia / Grisman Sessions that - as the story goes were stolen by the Pizza Delivery Guy - and all of a sudden ended up on a Dead Air type show in New York ! Then swiftly - just about everywhere-else too. Well, I got home just a few days following Jerry's Wake - and had my hands on them in just days. Lucky for me - good friends indeed. But one listen, and I was completely blown away by these - fully. Jerry & David just at an intimate Acoustic Best !!! I got these sessions on analog - and spun these tapes for like the next-year ! And we're talking once a week - or more ! type listening. Learning how to play the songs too, I mean you name it. And of course ... getting my friends copies, you know - returning favors ! So over that next year - I just about wore these tapes out - had back-up copies even ... naturally. Then in 1996 ! ... Whoa !!?! " Shady Grove " is launched !!! A CD release that I can honestly say changed my life - and only in good ways ! The Pizza Tapes copies that I had were ok - and they certainly did the job. But here is the ' Actual ' Studio-release version of this Jerry / David collaboration - just the way Grisman wanted it to be heard ! Completely-Amazing ... Seriously. Grisman always had a ' way ' with Garcia to really & truly get the absolute-best out of him - and that talent is spread all over the incredible tracks on this Disc. These two had a deep brotherhood in the " Old & In The Way " days - back in the 1973 era ... and sadly, due to some money squabbles - they didn't talk for years ... until running into each other at the Sweetwater ! in Mill Valley in like 1989 !! They buried the hatchet - and decided that it was time ( way over due ) ... to play some Acoustic Music together again ! Hence, totally part of the reason of the clear " freshness " to this material ... all recorded in David's " Dawg " Studio in Mill Valley in the Early-1990's. This one is Built to Last ! But at the same time - these guys are so darn great together that a lot of this is just " 1st Take " type stuff ... with little to no overdubbing / editing required ! Trust me, if you haven't heard this " Shady Grove " release - then you need to change-that fast ! As there is truly no-reason to wait.
