I've been collecting books for over 30 years, and most of what I'm offering here I've held for at least 20+ years -- some longer. It's time these titles found a new home. Offering: Jean Louis Bergonzo. The Spanish Inn. NY: Grove Press, 1968. First American Edition. VG in like DJ.Slight, general shelf wear.Jean Louis Bergonzo, born in 1939, is a French novelist associated with the "nouveau roman" (new novel) movement, which emerged in the mid-20th century. This literary movement is characterized by its experimental approach to narrative structure, often eschewing traditional plot and character development in favor of exploring the inner consciousness of characters and the subjective nature of reality.Considered Bergonzo's most-notable works. First published in 1966 by Éditions de Minuit in Paris as L'Auberge Espagnole and translated into English by Helen R. Lane and published as The Spanish Inn. (Super-cool side note on Éditions de Minuit: founded in 1941 during the German occupation of France, the house originally operated clandestinely as a resistance publisher. It became known for publishing works that defied censorship and later became a prominent platform for avant-garde literature, including the above-mentioned nouveau roman movement.) The Spanish Inn delves into the psyche of its unnamed narrator, who is confined in an asylum following the disintegration of his marriage. The narrative oscillates between reality and hallucination, reflecting the narrator's mental state as he grapples with themes of alienation, rejection, and the erosion of love. The novel employs intricate imagery and projections, characteristic of the nouveau roman style, to convey the protagonist's internal turmoil. Critics have noted that the novel's "many-leveled action" unfolds within the narrator's mind, intertwining past, present, and future. This approach aligns with the techniques of the new novel form, adapted by Bergonzo to serve his narrative purposes. The story begins and ends with the narrator in a bare corridor, dressed in striped pajamas, symbolizing his confinement and cyclical mental state. While The Spanish Inn may not be as widely known as works by other nouveau roman authors like Alain Robbe-Grillet or Nathalie Sarraute, it contributes to the movement's exploration of subjective reality and fragmented narrative structures. The novel's intricate portrayal of a disintegrating mind offers readers a compelling glimpse into the complexities of human consciousness and the impact of emotional trauma.Remember to come back regularly to check my listings, and don't forget to look over in my store for more, good stuff!
