Description: Method of payment Jean-Etienne Championnet & French Poet Jean Chapelain - RARE 1809 Copper Plate Portrait Prints SUBJECT/TOPIC: * Championnet - French soldier * Jean Chapelain - French poet This offering is for two (2) separate and different very rarely offered copper-plate engraved portrait prints mounted back to back on a SINGLE piece of album paper. These are 210+ years old and condition is actually quite good but does have faults. One engraving tends to be better than the other. PLEASE INSPECT PHOTOS and READ NOTE BELOW. Either of the engravings is well worth the item value. See Important Note below. HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE *Jean-Étienne Vachier Championnet, also known as Championnet (13 April 1762, Alixan, Drôme – 9 January 1800), led a Republican French division in many important battles during the French Revolutionary Wars. He became commander-in-chief of the Army of Rome in 1798 and of the Army of Italy in 1799. *Jean Chapelain (4 December 1595 – 22 February 1674) was a French poet and critic during the Grand Siècle, best known for his role as an organizer and founding member of the Académie française. Chapelain’s approach was a challenge to others of his day who appealed in doctrinaire fashion to classical Greek authorities. His critical views were advanced primarily in short articles and monographs and in his voluminous correspondence. Chapelain’s own poetic works are considered mediocre. His epic La Pucelle (“The Maid”), which he began in 1630, was a failure when the first 12 cantos were published 26 years later. Important Note about condition: Each print is spot-glued (in a couple spots - top and bottom) to the album page in which it was mounted more than 150 years ago. The print does not lie perfectly flat due to the laid paper and its attachment to the paper backing. As a result, the scan can cause areas of shading to appear, which are not really there. However, these prints do have occasional foxing and other faults. These are very rare 200+ year-old copper plate print images of famous individuals rarely seen in portraits and well worth consideration. Prints are priced to sell as a great piece of 210+ year old history. I don't use the word "rare" often, but it does apply to these engravings. Each print is a really nice copper plate print on medium-weight laid paper. The literary work in which it was originally published is quite rare and an example was offered in Sotheby's Manuscript Auction in 2003. The individual portraits are very sharp and highly detailed. Represented are the most important men and from all nations of the world who shaped pre-1800 history (from ancient times to the later 1700s) , many of whom are rarely available in portrait form. This print(s) is one removed by someone c1910 from their original volumes and placed in an album. I have seen only a few of these prints in European antiquarian print shops before, selling at prices in excess of $25. Please visit my store for other prints from this series. I will be adding only a few of these each month to my store. So, If you are interested in a specific person, please contact me. CONDITION General age toning; minor foxing Please INSPECT PHOTO. <
