Description: American Colonial Revival sterling silver inkstand. Retailed by JE Caldwell in Philadelphia. Shaped oval stand with curvilinear foliate rim and four capped volute supports. Three baluster vessels for holding the basic equipment for 18th-century social and business transactions. This inkstand based on the one used for the Signing of the Declaration of Independence that was made by Philadelphia silversmith Philip Syng in 1752. Gives an aura of solemnity to personally important signings, even when parchment and ink are not involved. Engraved on stand underside: "Replica of Pen and Ink Stand / used in signing / The Declaration of Independence / Presented to / Humble Oil & Refining Company / by / Insurance Company of North America /1954".
