Description: Glimpses of World History by Jawaharlal Nehru 1989 centenary edition Oxford University Press (Delhi, India), 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches tall x 2 1/2 inches thick paperbound in glossy pictorial covers, illustrated with maps, index, xxii, [17], 992 pp. Slight to moderate soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with slight creasing to tips. Small, light dampstain to the bottom margin at the gutter for the first 30 pages or so of front matter, not intruding into text. Otherwise, a clean, bright and unmarked copy. First published by Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) in 1934, Glimpses of World History is subtitled Being further letters to his daughter, written in prison, and containing a rambling account of history for young people. It is a collection of 196 letters on world history written between 1930 and 1933 in various prisons in British India: Naini and Bareilly prisons as well as at Dehradun; two letters were written aboard an Italian steamer in the Arabian sea. The letters were addressed to his young daughter Indira and were meant to introduce her to world history. The New York Times said this is 'one of the most remarkable books ever written ... Nehru makes even H.G. Wells seem singularly insular ... One is awed by the breadth of Nehru's culture.'
