This hanging scroll is a rare Edo period (1603–1868) piece depicting Shōmen Kongō, a protective deity of Japan. Shōmen Kongō is believed to ward off evil spirits and diseases, safeguarding health, and is associated with the Kōshin belief, which blends elements of Taoism, Buddhism, and Shinto. In the center, Shōmen Kongō is portrayed with a powerful presence, backed by a red halo of flames. Two attendants stand on either side, symbolizing his divine authority. Below, two demonic guardians, a rooster, and a monkey are depicted, each holding symbolic meaning within the belief system. The rooster is said to drive away evil spirits, while the monkey represents the teaching of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
