Its white, glowing skin comes from gofun, refined powdered oysters. This lovely Gosho doll portrays a boy holding a wooden festival mask of Shi-Shi (Sakamoto no Shishimai), with an attached cloth covering his head. His face is delicately hand-painted, He wears a golden orange apron with a red cord. He is performing the Lion Dance. The traditional dance is usually performed during New Year to fend off epidemics and devils. The doll comes with and is attached to its original wooden base. Kaga dolls are made of paulownia sawdust, which is hardened with glue and placed in a mold. The dolls are then coated repeatedly with a mixture of shell powder and glue to create the glossy skin of the doll. The warmth of natural materials such as paper and wood, and the subtly different expressions of the dolls, still reflect the traditions of Kaga Hyakumangoku and the skills of its craftsmen.
