James Payn / Short note from Oct 1884 from the English novelist to friend who

Description: Short note from Oct. 1884 from the English novelist to a friend who was hosting his daughters Author: Payn, James Title: Short note from Oct. 1884 from the English novelist to a friend who was hosting his daughters Description: Stationary measures 4.25 x 3.5 inches, one sheet folded with 2 1/2 sides filled in, mounted to small tan sheet. Hard to read but from what we can make out Payn is writing to a woman thanking her for looking after two of his daughters. "You have sent back our two girls...so much bettered in health but dreadfully [?]. They seem to have enjoyed themselves immensely." He thanks her for having sent with them some delicious [hawthorns or hambones] which he enjoyed "better than any Lord Mayor's feast." He ends with something about a puzzling postcard she had sent. Not the easiest handwriting to decipher. James Payn was an English novelist (1830-1898) and at the time was one year into his editorship at Cornhill Magazine, where he succeeded Leslie Stephen.
