Description: THE THREE PERILS OF MAN, War, Women and Witchcraft by JAMES HOGG. Edinburgh: Cannongate Classics, 1996. Edited, with an introduction by Douglas Gifford. Oversized, thick paperback. Reprint of the first modern (1989) edition of this rare fantasy novel by the author of the classic THE PRIVATE MEMOIRS AND CONFESSIONS OF A JUSTIFIED SINNER (1824), which is one of the great masterpieces of 19th century weird fiction. This book (originally published in 1822) fell into neglect, not understood in its time. Hogg remained known as a poet but has only been more recently been rediscovered as a writer of supernatural fiction. A sprawling historical novel set in Scotland during the Middle Ages, with lots of magic and sorcery, including appearances by the two legendary magicians, Michael Scott and Roger Bacon. This was cut by two thirds and reprinted in some later editions of Hogg's work as "The Siege of Roxburgh." Avoid that version. It has (literally) all the magic taken out of it. This is a reprint of the original 1822 edition. Always happy to combine shipments on multiple wins. Note that this is a large and relatively heavy book. It could be expensive to send this out of the USA. My foreign postage prices are a guess. If they prove too high, I will refund the difference. Note that the foreign postage prices are a guess.
