Description: James Henry Stark's Antique Views of Boston Vintage HC Book VG FreeShip Leverett (foreword by) James Henry Stark (Author) Theodore Thomte (Editor) Saltonstall ANTIQUE VIEWS of BOSTONThe town of Boston In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries is depicted here through the eyes of the engravers and print makers of those times. This new edition of a fRare book first published in 1882 includes the high polnts and delightful sidelights of Bosens fascinating history, related ta the grand, flowing style of another, more gracious age.The works of many Boston artists and craftsmen are captured within these pages. Antigue Views of Boston carries the reader from the city’s earliest days, through the colonial period, into the 19th century: A number of the prints from revolutionary times were engraved by Paul Revere. Each handsomely reproduced illustration is described in a detalled text which adds color, interest and enjoyment. Much of the face of Boston has changed In the last few years, but many of the architectural delights of her earlier days that are detalled in this work are still part of the lives of many Bostonians. The first edition of Antigue Views of Boston soon became a prized collector's item. The work was republished at the beginning of this century. The 1901 edition Is now long out of print. Theodore Thomte undertook to have this new editon published in order to have this rare and valuable series of perspectives on Boston in print once again. Rejoin the Boston of statelierdays, througs views and words that reflect the grandeur of the city's proud heritage. Theodore Thomte is a Bostonian by choice, not birth. He was born in New York to a family whose heritage has long been connected with the sea. Although a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, he attributes most of his education to other sources. His travels on active duty as a naval officer and later in the printing and publishing business have taken him to Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and the South Pacific, as well as to the Antarctic several times. When in a reflective mood, he often despairs at the lack of value and quality in much of contemporary American life. He feels that this lack is architecturally apparent in most of the modern structures, public and private, that litter American cities and suburbs with plodding design and shoddy construction. He strongly believes representative examples of man's works in every period should be preserved, and has been active in a number of projects to foster such preservation. He feels that the buildings of quality treated in this volume reflect the higher standards of an earlier day. Most of the year Mr. Thompte lives in a Boston Wharf apartment.
