Description: James Hain Friswell - Blackwood's Comic Zadkiel; An Almanac - 1855 U.K. first edition published by James Blackwood First edition. Comprising: Folding hand-coloured frontispiece, illustrated title page and 88 pages. The book is firmly bound by notable London bookbinder J. [Jeremiah] Larkins (1833-1907) in blue half-Morocco, with raised bands, simple gilt lettering and decoration, marbled paper covered boards and matching marbled endpapers, the leather is slightly rubbed and marked, the extremities are bumped and the paper to the boards has suffered some minor damage and chips. The text block, with gilt to the top edge, is age toned, slightly marked and foxed, with a few small chips and short closed tears to some page edges. An excellent satirically comic almanack, with targets including the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Austin Layard, Lord Palmerston, Benjamin Disraeli and, perhaps most famously, Uncle Tom's Cabin in the form of Grand Nephew Tom's Cabin, with an accompanying illustration of "America Fifty Years Hence", showing black and white folk mixing socially as equals and sharing a single cup of punch with two straws. There are pencil annotations to the latter engaging with the prediction in two hands, which make grimly accurate reading: "not yet. 1896" and "not yet 1933.". The whole format is a parody of the Almanac produced by that most famous of Victorian astrologers, Richard James Morrison AKA Zadkiel Tao Sze. This is a well preserved copy, in a simple but attractive early Larkins binding.
