Description: The Cherokee Land Lottery, Containing A Numerical List of the Names of the Fortunate Drawers in Said Lottery, with An Engraved Map of Each District Author: SMITH, James F. Title: The Cherokee Land Lottery, Containing A Numerical List of the Names of the Fortunate Drawers in Said Lottery, with An Engraved Map of Each District Publication: New York: Harper and Brothers, 1838 Edition: First Edition Description: First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 413pp., plus 59 engraved maps. List of Abbreviations and 4pp. of publishers advertisements are also present, as called for. Mild staining to boards and outer joints thinly cracked, but still a sound copy. Some internal foxing, but less than is usually seen. Contemporary pencilled ownership inscription on the front paste-down (that of May H. Cabaniss, who notes it is a gift from her father, John J. Howard, who was a prominent citizen of Cartersville, GA, right in the middle of "Cherokee country"). A complete and entirely unrestored original example of this significant volume of Georgia history. In the first few decades of the 19th century, the state of Georgia systematically stole land from the Cherokee and Muscogee Nations, distributing the land in equal parcels to white Georgians in a lottery system. This volume represents the first complete list and set of maps which illustrate who exactly "won" each plot of land. The book, used almost constantly by lawyers, real estate agents, and historians throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, is always found abused, and often with at least one or two maps missing (these are often sought after by descendants of the original lottery winners). Surviving complete copies are usually restored. Ours is thus a very good or slightly better unrestored example, rare thus. Sabin 12444. Very good.
