Description: Item : This original watercolor painting was done by artist James E. Seward (1926-2011). It is a portrait of a Sauk Indian Chieftain. This looks to be a portrait of Keokuk, one of the most famous Sauk Chiefs who was highly respected by his people and the U.S. officials that knew him. The painting measures 12 1/2" by 8 3/4" and with frame it measures 21 1/2" by 17 3/4". It is signed in the lower left. The painting has been nicely matted and framed with a wooden frame. And, it is covered with what feels to be glass. The frame has some small nicks in the wood. The painting is in excellent condition. Rev. James Edwin Seward was an award-winning painter and illustrator. His paintings grace the walls of such companies as the General Motors Corporation, the Wells Fargo Bank, The McDonald Investment Company, and the Will Rogers Museum in Oklahoma. "I try not only to inform, but to move and delight with my artwork…I want the viewer to have an emotional reaction to each painting. That’s what makes it a work of art rather than just an illustration.” Keokuk (1767–1848) was a chief of the Sauk. Keokuk County, Iowa and the town of Keokuk, Iowa, where he is buried, are named for him. In 1829 Caleb Atwater met Keokuk and wrote: "Keokuk, the principal warrior of the Sauks, is a shrewd politic man as well as a brave one and he possesses great weight of character in their national councils. He is a high minded, honorable man and never begs of the whites." **To see more original paintings** - Click on the Paintings - Fine Arts category to the left of this . - Then click on the Category of your choice:- Native American, Western U.S., Eastern U.S., European, Asia & Middle East, Latin America, Sculpture I am currently listing wonderful old vintage and contemporary paintings every week on eBay.
