PAUL GETTY The business mogul signs this typed document forgiving loans that he gave to a Mrs. Gloria Bigelow, totaling $4,800 Document signed: "J Paul Getty", 1p, 8x11. Los Angeles, California, 1974 December 31. On his business letterhead to Mr. Norris Bramlett, Los Angeles, California. In full: "During the year 1974 I made loans of money to Mrs. Gloria Bigelow as follows: [Getty then lists amounts of $400 for the months of January through December, totally $4,800] It is my desire that all of the above mentioned loans made to Mrs. Bigelow be forgiven as of this date. You are hereby instructed to so treat them in my records and to prepare Federal and State Gift Tax returns as may be necessary." In the year he signed this document, Getty opened his first museum, a recreation of the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum, on his Malibu property. In 1916, Jean Paul Getty (1892-1976) and his father, George, had incorporated the Getty Oil Company, an early precursor to the great conglomerate. During the Depression Era, Getty, who was a millionaire by the age of 24, bought extensive quantities of stock, and, in 1956, he gained control of Pacific Western, which he renamed Getty Oil, ending a 19-year stock battle with Standard Oil. The significantly larger Getty Oil Company became the world's largest privately owned business and made the enterprising Getty a billionaire. Although he was one of the world's richest men, Getty had a legendary reputation for miserliness. However, he shared his multi-million dollar collection of art and antiquities with the public by establishing the J. Paul Getty Museum, the largest endowment granted to an art museum at that time. Lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold at the descenders of the "J" and "y". Signature slightly smudged at "tty". Staple holes at upper blank margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
