Lithographed in Philadelphia by Bowen & Company.Covering from Pilatka to Tampa Bay and shows the various battle grounds and troop movements through the region.Small inset at top shows the whole state of Florida. At lower right the larger inset is the Battle Ground of Major Dade. It locates the position of the Indians at various stages of the Advance Guard and more Very Good / No Dust Jacket As Issued. This detailed battle plan covers a broad swath of contested territory across central Florida that was host to numerous conflicts between American troops and indigenous tribes during the first half of the 19th century. In particular, the events of the Second Seminole War during the year 1836 are depicted in some detail.Battlegrounds, encampments, Native American villages (both hostile and friendly), and prominent geographic features are identified according to the legend below the title. The Second Seminole War (1835-1842), was the result of the United States government attempting to force the Seminoles to leave Florida altogether, as described in the Treaty of Payne's Landing of 1832, which Seminole leaders claimed that they signed under duress. Battles and skirmishes raged throughout the Florida peninsula, with the outgunned and outnumbered Seminoles often using guerrilla warfare tactics, and both sides massacring civilians during the conflict.The war eventually resulted in most of the Seminole population in Florida being killed in battle, ravaged by starvation and disease, or relocated to Indian Territory in modern Oklahoma.
