He was one of the figures who tried to block partition of Palestine and a cofounder of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Edward Said called him one of the people he rescued the most for the soundness of his thinking and for his activism. The same problems manifesting themselves today in Israel existed back then. As Tannous quotes Philip Hitti as saying, "the basic issue is the Arab - Israeli issue...
