Original Narrative: The Capella Reale, or Palatina, is the most exquisitely beautiful architectural object in Sicily, an island abounding in graces of this description, even beyond the lands of Italy or Greece. It is an appendage to the palace of the viceroy; its foundation is attributed to Count Roger the Norman, and Mr. Knight declares it to be "a perfect gem of its kind, a most singular and interesting specimen of that mixture of style which is only to be found, and could only be found, in Sicily." The ground-plan, or general design, is that of a long Latin cross, the intersection of the nave and transepts being covered with a Greek cupola. Side-aisles, three apses, and all the accompaniments of a great cathedral, are here, in miniature, perfectly portrayed. The pillars which separate and sustain the pointed arcades between nave and aisles, are not only of distinct materials, such as Egyptian granite and variegated marble, but the work of different ages, which they illustrate happily by the foliage and ornaments of their capitals, as well as, in one or two instances, by the reeding and wreathing of the shafts. The sunny character of the Sicilian climate prohibited the introduction of the open casement into a temple of worship, where "a dim religious light" best suits those moments when we retire, as it were, within ourselves, and make the soul the subject of its own contemplation. This object is here obtained by the construction of a window, admitting jealously the rays of light. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
