Description: Israel's History and the History of Israel by Mario Liverani One of Italys foremost experts on antiquity addresses a new issue surrounding the birth of Israel and its historic reality. FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description In Israels History and the History of Israel one of the worlds foremost experts on antiquity addresses the birth of Israel and its historic reality. Many stories have been told of the founding of ancient Israel, all rely on the biblical story in its narrative scheme, despite its historic unreliability. Drawing on the literary and archaeological record, this book completely rewrites the history of Israel. The study traces the textual material to the times of its creation, reconstructs the evolution of political and religious ideologies, and firmly inserts the history of Israel into its ancient-oriental context. Author Biography Mario Liverani teaches the History of the Ancient Near East at the University of Rome La Sapienz. He is Lincei Academic and honorary member of the American Oriental Society. Local History and Universal Values Bibliography Review "There have been many histories of ancient Israel, but this one, from one of the worlds greatest ancient historians, is nothing less than a tour de force. Of course, no one will agree with all of Liveranis arguments and conclusions. But no one, I venture to predict, will come away from reading him without being challenged, indeed exhilarated by the depth of his insights and the breadth of his vision." Peter Machinist, Hancock Professor of Hebrew and Other Oriental Languages, Harvard University "Liveranis intentions in offering an account of the biblical transformation of Israels past from trivial event to significant re-elaboration are to be commended. His book is an appropriate and exciting alternative to the biblical narrative." Times Literary Supplement, June 23, 2006 Long Description One of Italys foremost experts on antiquity addresses a new issue surrounding the birth of Israel and its historic reality. Many a tale has been told of ancient Israel, but all tales are alike in their quotation of the biblical story in its narrative scheme, despite its historic unreliability. This book completely rewrites the history of Israel through the evaluation of textual and literary critiques as well as archaeological and epigraphic findings. Conceived along the lines of modern historical methodology, it traces the textual material to the times of its creation, reconstructs the temporal evolution of political and religious ideologies, and firmly inserts the history of Israel into its ancient-oriental context. Review Quote "Liverani charts a sinuous and expert path through the minefield that has come to mark the discussion over how to reconstruct ancient Israelite history. No one will come away from reading him without being challenged, indeed exhilarated by the depth of his insights and the breadth of his vision." - Peter Machinist, Harvard University "Liveranis intentions in offering an account of the biblical transformation of Israels past from trivial event to significant re-elaboration are to be commended. His book is an appropriate and exciting alternative to the biblical narrative." - Times Literary Supplement "The work is stimulating, original in all its parts, and contains many original insights that will no doubt fertilize all future discussions about the Bible as a source for the history of ancient Israel." -Review of Biblical Literature Details ISBN1845533410 Author Mario Liverani Short Title ISRAELS HIST & THE HIST OF ISR Series Bibleworld Language English ISBN-10 1845533410 ISBN-13 9781845533410 Media Book Format Paperback Year 2007 Country of Publication United Kingdom Imprint Equinox Publishing Ltd Place of Publication Sheffield DOI 10.1604/9781845533410 UK Release Date 2007-07-01 AU Release Date 2007-07-01 NZ Release Date 2007-07-01 Pages 448 Publisher Taylor & Francis Ltd Publication Date 2007-07-01 Alternative 9781904768760 DEWEY 956.94 Audience General We've got this At The Nile, if you're looking for it, we've got it.
