[Courtesy Emma Amos.] Ruth Inge Hardison (February 3, 1914 – March 23, 2016) was an American sculptor, artist, and photographer, known particularly for her 1960s busts (or sculpted portraits) entitled "Negro Giants in History".[1] Hardison's 1983 collection called "Our Folks", which features sculpted portraits of everyday people, is also of note. Her artistic productions largely surround historical black portraiture. She was especially interested in creatively representing the unspoken voices of the African American past. She was the only female in the Black Academy of Arts and Letters (BAAL), a group that encourages awareness of black artistic accomplishments, when this organization was founded in 1969.[2] Early lifeShe was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1914.[3] Her family later moved to Brooklyn, New York. Before completing her education, Hardison acted in the Broadway Productions of George Abbott's Sweet River and Country Wife (the latter opposite Ruth Gordon).[4] During her brief career in the theater, she began sculpting as a hobby. When she took part in the year long What a Life production, she created a sculpture of its cast, which was later displayed at the Mansfield Theatre.[5] As a young woman, she studied Music and Creative Writing at Vassar College. She also studied at the Art Students League of New York and Tennessee State University.[6] The Brooks Atkinson Theatre NYC, formerly the Mansfield Theatre, displayed one of Hardison's first sculpturesArtistic works Hardison attended Vassar College in New YorkHardison's works largely begin as clay, wax, or plaster molds, and are later cast into cast stone or bronze.[7] Hardison began "Negro Giants in History" (a series of cast iron busts) in 1963. Her first bust in that series was of Harriet Tubman, which measured eight inches in height; she created busts of W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Sojourner Truth, and Mary McCleod Bethune, among others.[7] [8] Her bronze bust of Douglass, for example, was unveiled at Princeton's Firestone Library in 1983.[9] Other public works include a 7-foot abstract figure called "Jubilee" which stands on the campus of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, a series of 18 children on an outdoor wall of I.S.74 in Hunts Point in the Bronx, and a five-foot mother and child given to Mount Sinai Hospital in 1957 to express her gratitude for their help in delivering her only child, Yolande, in 1954.[citation needed] DeathHardison died in 2016, aged 102, from Alzheimer's disease. During her breaks off-stage, she sculpted heads and busts of her castmates that went on to ignite a lifelong career working with clay. Sojourner Truth is from Hardison’s series Negro Giants in History. Her mission as an artist was centered around creating affordable artwork of Black Americans that could be used as inspiration and educational tools for adults, schoolchildren, college students, etc. “By memorializing such great, selfless people, I have been able to put within the experience of many schoolchildren, college students and adults those much-needed models of inspiration, and many of those who read the biographies of these sculptured heroes are encouraged to try to make their own lives more meaningful.” -Inge Hardison quoted in The New York Times, April 2016 In 1990, New York State presented Hardison’s original sculpture of the great abolitionist Sojourner Truth to Nelson Mandela. Inge Ruth Hardison is the creator of the series of sculpted portraits entitled, "Negro Giants In History". She started this series in 1963 with an 8" bust of Harriet Tubman. Through the years other portraits followed: Paul Robeson, Frederick Douglass, Dr. W.E.B. Dubois, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Dr. Washington Carver, Sojourner Truth and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. The essence of their character as well as their likeness are aptly depicted in Ms. Hardison's sculptured presentation. Her desire in their creation was to put this legacy of art into the hands of many. She feels that there has always been a need for heroes, but especially in today's world. She has even extended the art form to include a Sojourner Truth pin, a wearable work of art and prized jewelry. Inge Hardison has also been commissioned to do various works, including the Ingenious Americans series: portraits of African American doctors, scientists, and inventors. In Harlem her 35-inch bronze head of Jackie Robinson is installed in the play center after him. The "New Generation" bronze mural of 18 boys and girls on the outside of Intermediate School #74 in the Bronx is also to her credit. A 21-inch bronze head of Frederick Douglass as a youth was commissioned by the Black Princeton Alumni and unveiled in 1983 in the Firestone Library of Princeton University. In 1998, Ms. Hardison completed a commission of a monumental bronze figure entitled "Jubilee" for the Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. Inge Hardison is included in "Call Them Heroes", a social studies textbook, published by the Board of Edication of NY.; "Handstands", a social studies textbook published by Allyn & Bacon, Boston, Mass.; "One Hundred Successful Blacks", Book 2, Ebony Success Library; "Who's Who Among Black Americans"; and "Who's Who in America". Hardison's 24-inchhigh portrait of Sojourner Truth was presented to Nelson Mandela by NY Governor Cuomo in 1990. The sculptures Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune and W.E.B. Dubois were used in a presentation to DC Mayor, Sharon Pratt Dixon, the entire Congressional Black Caucus and to Chief Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola of Nigeria in 1991. The 2-foot standing Sojourner Truth was used in a presentation in 1995 to the Sewell-Belmont House Museum and Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. In February 2004, Inge Hardison was one of the "Harlem is..." Honorees recognized for their significant influence on the arts in Harlem. She acknowledges that Harlem has been a very important experience in her life.
